tranny builders-few ?'s about an 80E

I just picked up an 2000 80E.I was told it has 70k miles,all forward gears and NO reverse.I pulled the pan and found nothing bad.The fluid was old though.I also pulled the reverse servo but it was good, so it must be the reverse band.
I eventually want to put this trans in my truck below.I have decided to do the repairs myself to the 80E and I know my first step is to buy a ATSG manual.Also I will install a shift kit.
Here goes the ?'s
1.When doing this band repair do I need a rebuild kit [bushings,seals,o-rings] ? Is this something you always do when opening a trans?
2.Should the clutches be changed also?
3.What special tools are a must have?
4.Has anyone ever ran the 80E output shaft that works with the 60E t-case input shaft?
Ultimately if everything looks good [clutches,seals,o-rings,bushings] can I just change the band and put it back together?

I know you don't want to run the 80e output shaft that works with the 60e input hub on the tcase, that is one of the weak links you are trying to get rid of. You can pick up a nice hi-performance rebuild kit on ebay for a pretty reasonable price; clutches, seals, o-rings, etc... If you are going to go through the trouble of opening it up, might as well do it good enough to not have to worry about it for quite a while.

Yes you can just replace the band if that is the problem, but you will at least need to replace the pump gasket, pump o ring, and valve body gaskets.
But IMO, if the band is hurt for whatever reason, then I can almost guarantee there is more damage to the trans. Whether it be to age,abuse, or whatever.
Best advice is to just open it up, inspect everything, and then go from there.

Make sure to flat sand the band servo cover before you reinstall it. I have seen these have dings on them or not be very flat when rebuilding these units. I personally feel this is the reason why we see failure in this area of the trans. I use a granite machinist block with a piece of sand paper on it for this. You could use a file, sand stone or a good flat surface with a piece of sand paper like I do for this. HTH Vince
