Default Are these holes a problem?

long story short... '02 2wd 4.8, less than 40k since last rebuild by a nationwide... outfit, use for towing small loads quite often, pull out of work one day and on the 1-2 shift here a "zing-POP" ( I know, but thats what it sounded like) and lose reverse.

so drop the pan and find lots of friction materal and some shavings. Now I drop the trans and start teardown and find two spots where the center case seems to be broken out and even ready to break again around edges. so can someone tell me if these are actually drain back holes? can i clean them up with a diegrinder (so im not worried about sending more chunks through the trans)? or do i need a new center case...

thanks

first, just behind front pump pickup in center

second just forward of rear of center case (normally covered by valve body)

Mine looks the same. The part that looks broke is just overrun from the casting. Theholes are supposed to be there. Will get some pics of mine if ya like.

Rado, if you could get me a couple of shots id appreciate it.

got the tranny disassembled today, other than the 3-4 chutch frictions looking like they've been awful hot, it looks like a peice of the casting flash around the front hole broke off and went for a ride (theres a few other spots where the casting flash is cracked and hanging on by a thread) I didn't get any pics today (forgot the camera) but I will Tomorrow.

While im thinking of it, My ATSG manual says to remove and discard the 3-4 load release spring "for a much improved 2-3 shift" (elsewhere in the manual its called a "3-4 clutch boost spring asm") does anyone have any experiance with this? I tow with my truck alot and im looking to try to beat my 40,000 mile average this time, so i dont want to do anything to burn up the clutches any faster.

thanks again for the help

I will get pics in a few minutes. I read on another thread that with the LSX motors it is better to keep the springs in place and not remove them.
