Default Th400 swap, converter clearance??

So I did a th400 swap on my 08 NNBS, when bolting up the torque converter it left this much space between the pump housing. Is this normal? First th400 swap so I don’t have anything to reference. I’m taking the torque converter bolts off now to clearance the mounting surface to the flexplate. I’m finishing up the swap and now I’m second guessing everything lol. Does anyone have a picture of a properly seated torque converter and how much it sits outside the pump housing? I heard the 3 clicks when installing it but I’m unsure if it came out when getting it in the truck!

You need to seat the converter into the transmission all the way back until it bottoms out. Then check the clearance between the converter and flex plate. My Circle-D converter instructions say you need 1/8" converter to flex plate clearance (+/- .0025")

Did you use a special swap flex plate for the non LS transmission swap?

i fully seated the converter into the trans before I installed the trans. I heard it bottom out then I installed it in the truck, the only thing I didn’t do was clearance the flexplate to the converter mounting pads, which I’m doing now. If I had to guess, by eye it looked like a lot more clearance than 1/8. I used the flexplate that came in the vans. Supposed to be perfect for LS to th400.

White the proper converter clearance it keeps the converter drive engaged deep enough into the transmission pump without bottoming out and damaging the pump. You can use washers to space out extra clearance (unless it's excessive) which should be easy with the TH400. The 4L60's are a pain to space because of the full bellhousing. You have to work through the starter hole for each bolt & washer. Post back you clearances for other members looking for future reference.

Just an update, I removed the torque converter bolts and measured the clearance, 1/8 fit between no problem, 3/16 fit if I shoved it in there but realistically I’d assume 5/32 would be the biggest that would fit. Shim it to get it down to 1/8??
