SPEC5 Clutch Issue
#12
the 4.30's are made by motive gear and I got mine from summit. About stock clutches, my stock 5 speed clutch held 445rwhp 478rwtq for 10k miles with 3 trips to the track with slicks. It is now in my 95 383 truck and is soft in every way and drives like a dream. I'm confident the Ls7 clutch will do well if track use is occasional.

I had 3.73's stock and then bought a tru-track and put the 3.73's back in. I then bought the 4.30's on it and set it up with all stock shims and it is quiet as a mouse. I highly recommend, but check the pattern and backlash to be sure. I ended up with .007" backlash with the 4.30's and motive gear called for .008-.010". I tried it and pattern looked pretty good so I went with it an it turned out fine.

no. The 3.73's came off a stock diff and put them on a Detroit tru-trac and then the 4.30's worked on the detroit so I think you shouldn't have any problems with the 4.30's on the stock unit. I might do some research more if you don't have 3.73's or higher numerically, I don't think there is a different carrier for the 3.42's but I don't know for sure. The different carriers is an old school thing from what I can tell and have experience with but I can't gaurantee anything other than what i've said. interperet it as you will.

It all depends on tire size. I have 31.5" tires and the first gear and 6th gear drivabilities are good but on the borderline. If you have any larger tire or smaller cubes i'd recommend a 4.56.

First gear in the T56 is 2.62/2.66 i can't remember which but anyhow, they were built for a 26" tall tire on a car. A truck manual has a 3.82 first gear. With my current mods in my sig I cant spin a tire in first if I lay into it just after clutch engagement. It isn't useless, I would consider it almost perfect with my set-up. I use 5th gear while cruising unless i'm doing at least 70 then I will shift to 6th.
