are the bilsteins good for towing? i have monroe's right now, they are ok... i have a 02 silverado extended cab 5.3 and with 153K and im about to replace my control arms tie rods and put 2in coil spacers and i will be running 285 70 17 bfg all terrains... sorry not trying to hi jack but which bilsteins would be better the HD's or the 5100's... i mainly stay on the road but do go off road occasionally, im all stock.

 

Bilsteins will be much better for towing than the Monroes, either the HD or the 5100s will work for you, the 5100s will give you more control at the expense of communicating more road imperfections (which is the same tradeoff you get when you upgrade to the HDs from a really soft shock like the Monroes) 2 or 4wd?

 

OK Shock Guy, what would you use on a 2005 RCSB with a 2/4 drop? I would like something that will enhance handling and complement the suspension and sway bars.

 

im with BC....my IAS shocks make me seasick and just blew out a rear. i have a 4/2 drop with hotchkis sway bars.

 

I found out that the Bilstein comfort vavling shocks are almost a match for the lengths of the 2/4 drop edelbrocks.

The Edelbrock fronts are 9.88" collapsed and 14.12" extended.
The Bilsteins are 10.25" collapsed and 14.5" extended

Edelbrock rears - 14.8" collapsed and 22.75" extended
Bilsteins - 14.5" collapsed and 23.25" extended

The Bilstein tech said that the best bet for this setup would be to send the shocks in to Bilstein and have an internal spacer added. With the lengths so close, it's up to you. Unfortunately we can't help with that if you do decide to go down that route, you'll need to call up Bistein CA's tech department at 858-386-5900 to find out exactly how much that will cost and how long it will take.

mine is a 02 5.3 2wd... i have asked around and some people say that the 5100's are for coil overs and some say they are only for lifted trucks... if they make the 5100's for my truck i'd rather have those... oh and my truck has the 2in coil spacers in the front if that matters.

 

Well, I had 5100 shocks on my '00 lifted 2wd. The lift was a Fabtech 3" spindle and 3" front coils that were actually closer to 2", so in theory this shocks should work with your setup IF the spacers really give you 2" of lift.

Bilstein doesn't market 5100 shocks for lifted 2wd Silverados from '99-'06. Instead you need to get the shocks for a lifted '97-'03 F150 2wd with a 6" lift.

 

I also wish Bilstein offered a 2wd drop shock. The whole reason I went the route I did w/. shocks was cause Bilstein didn't offer anything as a drop in. :nunchuk1:

Oh sure, long after it's too late, I find this info. If Bilstein would just market a direct bolt in 2/4 drop shock for the 99-up, I think they'd have a winner.

 

Holy crap, how did I miss that Bilstein comfort info? I may have found my future shocks if I don't go with the Belltech Street Performance shocks...plenty of time to decide as I won't be able to afford them for a while. I wonder what the specs are on the Belltechs...I'd probably need a rear shock for a 2" drop though, as I'm lowered 4" from 4x4 height, which is about 2" from 2wd height.

 

I second Bilstein HD's. The ride is great. Try some Nitrogen in the tires too.
