Ask him what he sets the backlash to? I believe it's supposed to be within 6 to 10,000 of an inch?? Should take care of the lack of contact

Isn't it kind of odd that you've had two different rearend setups, both with quality parts that have had problems after being set up at this shop?

no, first set up was with a supposedly new tru trac, but it ended up when i got it someone machined down the ends for smaller bearings, and US standard gears, set up fine after having collars made and pressed onto tru trac. This setup was fine until one of the collars backed off and made it whine.

I took it back and he pulled it apart and tack welded the collars on, ran great then broke the tacks, this time i let it go for to long and it wore a pattarn into my gears and it whines horrible.

I bought a Tru trac from Rons and a set of "oem" gears from a member here. Took the parts to have them installed, later on the mechanic calls and says he thinks the carrier is wrong. The ring and pinion are too loose and only way to get the proper back lash is to shim the carrier over to the passenger side .08 inch. that makes my brakes drag since it moves the axle shaft out.

I get part numbers from the boxes and call Rons, hes stumped and so is the installer, so am i.

We compare carriers, they are identical and correct, we then compare gears and the pinions are the same but the new oem ring gear is thinner than the us standard gear i had before.

I really needed my truck since it is my daily driver so i just put my old us standard gears in with the new tru trac and just deal with the whining.

Now im at the point of what do i do now. I have a set of OEM gears that are brand new but wont work, and i have no idea why. I dont want to go thru the hassle of trying to get a refund and send them back to the member.

The only thing i see to do now is buy a 3rd set of gears or a ring gear spacer to make my set work now.

Story over, WTF do i do?

I'm pretty sure that the 10 bolt Trutrac is designed for both the 8.5 and the 8.6" rears. You have to use the correct bearings depending on what rear the Trutrac is going into.

from eaton
Unit has large bearing journals that require special bearings when replacing O.E.M. small journal carriers.

Carrier Bearing Race OD 2.89"
Requires GM8.5-CBK-LH, GM8.5-CIK-LH or GM8.5-MOK-LH

Carrier Bearing Race OD 3.06"
Use OEM, CBK-2, GM8.6-CIK or GM8.6-MOK

you have to shim the carrier over to set backlash. thats the only way to do it. now explain to me how this is gonna make your brakes drag?

Yes i know this, but when you shim it over a 1/4 inch it also shifts the axles over, therefore making the brakes drag.
