Default Rattling/Banging noise around bellhousing

My truck has developed a rattling noise at idle, loudest around the bellhousing. Seems to be a little louder if I remove the inspection plate on the bellhousing. So far it seems to run normal. I started hearing it last weekend although not as loud and I didn't think too much of it. I am preparing to move in a couple of weeks and was hauling stuff to a friends house for storage today and now it is noticeably louder. I'm only hearing it at idle and it's making a nice clunk when I shut the engine off.

Any ideas here?

Sounds like you may have developed a crack in your flexplate. You should pull the starter and inspect the plate as well as you can, but I suspect you'll have to unbolt the trans and converter and pull the whole thing back a couple inches so you can get a good look at it.

Kind of what I was afraid of. I may have to take it somewhere to be looked at. What bad timing to have truck problems.

before you go buying a new flexplate do yoruself a favor and see if a converter bolt didnt back loose. this is common, it requires power and hard shifts to break a flexplate

I won't go buying anything until I find the problem. Would be nice if it's only a loose bolt. Guess I'll pull the starter tomorrow after work and check it out.

Ive been in both situations. It should only be a bolt or two backed out. I have broke a flywheel completely and it sucked. Lol

Thank you all for the info. 3 loose converter bolts it was. All tightened back up now with some loctite to hold them in place. Funny that it took 3 years for them to loosen up noticeably enough to start making noise. Glad that's all it was.

Well that's good to hear.

I used some blue loctite on mine and torque them down as much as I could get them. No worries about them backing out.

Same here. They lasted 3 1/2 years without any loctite so they should stay put now until they need to come out someday.
