right now i got 275/45/20 tires and id like to go to 295/40/20 which are for 10-11.5 in wheel would these still fit on my 8.5 wide wheels or not???

 

That size will fit on rims from 10"-12" rims. The tire will go on the rim (but it will not be easy putting it on). All your going to do is prematurely wear the centers out. They will not ride on the edges of the tire.
I would have to say NO. Don't even try it. Not unless you get wider rims.
The 40 series sidewall is too short for any stretching to occur to allow for a narrow rim.

As Jim says, "No" is the answer.

The best you could do with the 8.5" rim is something like 285/55 VR20 or305/50 VR20, but those are 32" tires, way taller than what you would want to run.

There is a 295/50 VR20 that is 31.7"

 

285/50/20 is another option.
