pulling tranny
Ok i have to pull 1the tranny out of my 4wd halfton and id like to now a few things before i start. How many bolts hold the bellhousing to the back of the motor? what gaskets will i need to do this if any. how much fluid does the converter hold and what is a good fluid to use. do i need any special tools for this and finally whats the best way to go about removing the top bolt out of the bellhousing?

No gaskets required to just remove and install the trans. You might want some anti-sieze on the bellhousing as mine was brutal to get off the engine. I had to use a sling tied to the trailer hitch with tension while rapping on the bellhousing with a hammer. Converter holds around 7 qts based upon a 12 qt capacity and the fact that I get a little over 4 quarts when I drain the pan. I use any reputable brand of non-synthetic Dexron III Special tools, 2 24" rachet extensions and an impact work well for the "tough to reach" bolts. Good luck! I did this about 2 months ago and it took me twice as long as I thought it would! |
36"-40" extension will make life a lot better. Remeber to get the starter out remove the oil dipstick tube as you can then remove without disconncecting wires and hang it up out of the way.

VERY good advice. You might want to look into a nice "impact" style wobble adapter for the end too. I got to the point that I can get a 4L60-E out of a 2WD in approx 45 min :bang: |

When you put it back in atleast try to put a quart of atf in the tc and dont rev the engine as soon as you start it or you will screw shit up. The pump rotors can shatter easily. A swivel socket will make your life much easier. Make sure when you pull the plugs out of the transfer case if you have the autrac label the three or four plugs that are the same or else it will drive oyu nuts trying to figue out which one is which. |
Man, been there. Just got my truck out of the shop, it had been there for over a month. If you can find a lift to put the truck on it will help GREATLY.

I screwed up the gasket between the transfer case and trans. I would recommend having one.

I just used a 3/8s swivel wrapped in electric tabe for that top bolt
oh yeah and a lot of extensions shoot at it from the tailhousing taking the xmember out and letting the weight pull it down will help alot |
