So I get in my new PI converter for the 80e today. It came with a new spring and instructions to add it to the converter limiter valve of the pump.
I assume its to up the converter clutch pressure?
How difficult to pull the pump and put it in? Special tools?

no special tools just take the pan off and then unbolt the pump you will see from the pan where you can take a flat head screw driver and pry the pump forward to get it out then you take the pump apart b/c you have to undo the pump assembly to get the pin out that holds the converter limit valve out its not the one with the clips. when you get it apart look at the diagram and you will see which one it is then you take a pick and push the pin out and take the valve out and put the lil spring inside the big spring thats already in there and let it ride on the valve it has a little ridge on it for the little one to sit on then put it back together with the gears little dots facing up then reassemble the pump and get a new pump gasket it was $5 dollars here oh and make sure you take the oring off the over drive shaft the sticks thru the pump or it won't come out. thats it then bolt it down in a cross pattern. hope you have fun with it my converter lock up and drive clutch binded and burnt my trans up around 10 miles with mine so im getting it built next week and p.i is sending me a new converter tuesday.

This didn't have anything to do with your trans failure did it? From your description you didn't grind down the ridge for the spring to slip over.
Thanks Bill. Must I follow directions explicitly. Can I have the beer first?

p.i recommended not grinding it down i called before b/c i seen the post on billreids thread where flt said to grind it down and p.i said not to grind it down so I listened to what they said It is a very simple install.

The instructions that came with it say "it may be necessary to grind the ridge off of the valve stem for the new spring to fit."
I guess it boils down to does it do what its suppose to do. Anybody know what this circuit/valve controls? At first I thought a pressure. Maybe to the TC clutch? Now that I see it looks like a valve, so this spring looks like a cushion spring.

damn my instructions didn't say that maybe when he sends me the new one it will i'm about pissed off at this point to losing the tranny from a converter failure but i guess it was a good time to put a tci high performance rebuild kit in it and not have to worry about messing with the trans for a long time.

LOL at some of the comments made by Bill in this thread. I have ground that little ring on the valve on every one I have ever done. At least a hundred if I had to guess. For those of you that have done this mod it sucks trying to get the retaining pin back in the pump as it is. I did try it without grinding first and said this is nuts. I then went to the shelf and grabbed a real early pump to look at the valve. It did not have the ring and I figured the spring was probably developed before the change to the valve had been done. Not sure if in the early pumps if the factory spring was weaker than the later pumps but I have seen units run for a long time without it on later pumps. Anyone remember a guy named Parish? LOL Anyhow I believe the idea of the spring is to help maintain pressure when the converter applies and also to help reduce/eliminate the pwm of the TCC. Hope this helps. Vince
