Question People with 4.10's or 4.56's in here

I have an 02 Tahoe on 24's. It's heavy as I have an Eaton LSD and 4.10 gears to put in. I was wondering if I shouldn't jump to 4.56's to counteract the wheel size and help with getting the weight moving. However, I have also been told that I will lose top end power, over 70mph if I go 4.10 and worse if I go 4.56. I rarely need to stomp the gas when I'm already going 70 but it happens time to time. I was wondering what you guys think. Would the 4.56's take some strain off the tranny as well or does it not matter? MPG is not a huge issue but if prices don't go back down I may take that into consideration. How much higher of an rpm will I run at say, 60 mph, running a 4.10 v. 4.56. (I have 3.73's now) Thanks in advance for your ideas

I lost top end noticeably with the 4.10's, and gained low end as a result (nothing is free). However, I will also say that 4.10's were enough for me....I wouldn't consider anything higher, like 4.56's. The 4.10's get my 5800 lb beast (6000+ lb with me in it) moving right along very nicely, and that is with the stock converter.

At this point what I am considering doing is swapping the 3.73's back in and getting a tightly stalled 2600-2800 converter. That way, I get the best of both worlds - mad power off the line, and the 19-20 MPG I was getting the stock gears, with the TC locked up at freeway speeds. Part of the power issue off the line is RPM's...something gears cannot compensate for, but a higher-stalled converter can.

Also, be careful when considering higher gears of the 10-bolt/8.6" variety....with a truck of your size, weight, and power, you need realize the very real potential for breaking them. The smaller the pinion gear (as you numerically go higher, the pinion gear gets smaller), the fewer teeth it has, which in turn creates more force on each tooth. Important to consider.

Thats why I post here, so don't do something stupid because I don't know better. I should just get your phone number and call you everytime I get a bright idea. I was pretty sure the 4.10's would do, but was looking for more info and opinions before I pay to install them.

Yeah, the 4.10's were a noticeable difference over the 3.73's as far as pickup. I think you'll be very happy with them.

Do you have room to put a beefed-up girdle/cover on your diff, or do you have the same issue I have (little to no clearance between the stock diff cover and the panhard bar)?

I never looked just for that but, I seem to remember plenty of room around the diff. What is the girdle for? I never heard of them.

Here, I'll just point you to an article as well as a manufacturer's website and a vendor's offering.

The key distance is behind the stock diff cover. How much room do you have between that and the panhard bar? You'll need an inch and a half or more.

Interesting. So, do you think I need this already or after I add the N20?

Up to you....depends on how soon you want to upgrade to a 9.5" rear.

I have a feeling I'm gonna end up buying a SS and modding the holy hell out of it. OR I'm gonna have to find a place that can build me a 408/427 stroker to put in the tank I drive now. Can I put FI on a stroker, even if not a Radix? Say...25 #'s of boost? Can there be an 11 second Tahoe?

It all depends on your tire size. I know you have 24's, but what size tire are you running?
