Default New project truck, 12 bolt OK?

I just picked up a 1964 Fleetside shortbed today, this will soon be powered by a turbo 408 and 80E trans.

It has a 12 bolt with a 2.73 ratio. Is the 12 bolt worth keeping/upgrading with a locker and new gears or should I save my money for a 9"? I am most concerned about breaking an axle and loosing the whole wheel at speed. The 408 should put 1000Hp to the wheels.

Also, I have a 4WD 80e right now that will need a 2WD output shaft and tailhousing. Where should I start to locate these parts?

Thanks in advance, enjoy the pics!

Looks like its definitely in "project" condition. Sounds like fun though; you should be fine with the 12 bolt; they're stronger than the 10 bolts are now.

I would jsut go ahead and upgrade to a 14 bolt out of a 3500 or do the 9 inch. If your going to mess with it I say do it right the first time, saves you money in the long run and alot less headaches. Nice project.
