here ya go flipper, looks like you have an easy 1.5" of useable BS allowing for 5/8" clearence to the leaf pack and inner fender well, note: inner fender well and outside edge of leafpack are about dead even +/- 1/4". My tires also have a 12" section width so this measurement will directly apply to you, my rear wheels are 5.5" BS, so it looks like 6.5" BS would easily fit leaving you 1 1/8" clearance to the leaf pack, and 7" of BS would leave you with the 5/8" of clearance to the leafpack as previously stated.

Well, I have read through this thread and what I can say is that there is no reason why you would need a 6.5" backspace on an 8.5" wide rim. 6.0" is what we use for airbagged trucks. At the very most, if you are going to run a FAT tire, then you can use 6.25", but if you arent airbagged, a 6.0" should be just fine. On my truck, I am running 22x10 with 305/35/22 and a 7.5" backspace and I can drive it on the floor and still not rub the bedsides.
Here is my truck air'd up at drive height (old pic before paint and shaving):
