Default need help..asap lost 3rd and drive

I was coming home tonight, halfway turning at a corner the car seemed to shift into neutral and heard a noise like metals breaking. I pulled over and looked under the truck, there was nothing abnormal, no leaks, no missing pieces.

Got back on and the truck drove off again like nothing happened.. Continued for another 3 miles then around 30-35 i gave it some gas for it to kickdown into 2nd

and the moment it downshifted, the same metal noise came. This time the car didnt drive off, I rode downhill in neutral till I parked it.

But now that I went to look at it more closely, reverse seems to work, going forward 3rd and DRIVE seem to make a whining noise but not move.. but if I put it in 2nd or 1st it will engage in either one.

Whats wrong? Whats breaking? Electrical? Mechanical ?

its a 2006 ecsb 4.8 4l60e by the way

Thanks

Transmission breakage, internal failure. Possibly a sunshell or reaction carrier, but it will have to come apart.

the truck is currently at 75k miles...it used to have 22's on 32" tires.. its now on 18's and 29" tire...is this a normal failure? was this just over abused?

Well the big wheels certainly didn't help, along with the bigger tires.. The truck is heavy to start, before all that, the 60e trans is notorious for being a turd in stock form..

I would say that you have an issue with an input sprag or the input carrier. Its inturnal!

No doubt it's suffered an internal failure in the input drum assy. How many miles are on the transmission? Has it been repaired in the past?

thanks guys, so i had it looked at today...I drove it to a trans shop using 1st and 2nd perfectly fine.

The guy said that by what it did, it was probably the input drum that blew...he said he could repair just that, which he did not recommend because with the metal debris, other parts were probably contaminated by now. The other option was a complete rebuild.

Since the whole trans still has to come apart the complete rebuild was only like 250$ more than the repair, but it comes with a 1yr/unlimited mile warranty.

Trans rebuild is now in progress, along with a vette servo and some valve body upgrades, not a complete shift kit though.

The final price was $900 and it will be ready by sat afternoon
