My good friend is a mechanic at a trans shop so he's gonna install it for me for cheap. I'd like to spend less than $400 on the part but upgrade from the shitty g80.

im the number one fan of "do it once do it right" but if money is tight for you and you just want to throw another g80 in ill let you have mine for $100 shipped of 150 shipped with the gears...?

Do you guys really think I'll need new ring and pinion? As far as I can see they have no damage? Also, couldnt things in there not be that messed up if it drives perfectly fine with that occasionaly turning clunk? I feel like if the interenal stuff was really screwed up I would hear a grinding noise or feel some friction while turning the wheels

Something like this?

If the ring and pinion teeth don't show any damage, I'd leave them. But you need to pull the pinion gear out, and make sure to clean any metal shavings out of the bearings and the lube passage below it. Inspect the bearings and races to be sure they don't have any pits in them. If they look fine, they probably are. Clean everything very well, including down the axle tubes. If you can find a good condition G80, then it should be ok as well. While they aren't the strongest carrier out there, there are hundreds of thousands that seem to last.

I really dont think I'll need to replace them. I'll check again tonight but seriously they looked fine yesterday. Thatd save me atleast $200 on parts and another $100 or so on labor.

When I tried to take the ring gear off my G80 all of the bolts snapped off or stripped the threads in the ring gear.

Here's some better pics. The gears look fine to me. No cracks or pits or nothing.
