need education on gears
#1
Havnt read a whole lot about gears or the rear end on the trucks and didnt find out a whole lot using the search and the rear end is going bye bye in the truck. I know I have 3.42 but dont know much else about if it is a G80, 10bolt, or 8.6 rear or what any of that means. What the heck is a locker, open dif, limitted slip, detroit locker, g80, all of this **** is so confusing, is there a write up somewhere. I would like to change my gear ratio to a 3.90 and go with a posi track rear end if that is a 2 wheel peel, or is that a limitted slip? I guess gear ratios is one purchase and changing over to 2 wheel burn is another from what I have been reading another words I can do one without having to do the other? Sorry if this sounds stupid.
Thanks in advance

Well, decided to do a little more research and edjumacated myself. From what I have been reading, a posi set up is the same as a limitted slip in which power is given to the wheel that is not slipping which makes sense. A locker is a speed sensitive design. That is, it reacts to wheel slip by sensing when one wheel is spinning substantially faster than the other and sends power to the wheel that is spinning slower. In an open differential setup, as soon as the drive wheel starts slipping, driveline torque follows the path of least resistance, giving all the power to the wheel that is slipping which sucks. To figure out which gear ratio my truck truley has, I looked up the vin in which GT4=3.73, GU6=3.42, GT5=4.10 and I do have the 3.42.
Im guessing I have an open differential, 8.6 10 bolt, 30 spline and have researched from where I should buy my set up. From what I have read, I should get a set of OEM 4.10 gears and that they are quieter and have read that they are made by AAM - american axle and manufacturing and that I should buy an after market Eaton Posi unit. I have also seen that a lot of people going through Randys Ring and Pinion as well. A good site that explains the different eaton gears is located at http://www.traction.eaton.com/prod2.htm. If I were to purchase the gear and carrier set located at http://speed-eng.com/store/product_i...oducts_id=3809
does this include everything I will need to have it installed along with the 4.10 gears I want?
