I packed the seal with vaseline to hold the spring in place, it didn't pop out when I installed the seal. Even if it did pop out, it would leak around the outside of the yoke, not through the center of the yoke like mine is doing.
Oops. Missed the part about it leaking through the center.

Got a chance to look at it today. Turns out the spring on the pinion seal DID come off. I can't believe I didn't notice it before I put the yoke on

The spring got stuck between the yoke and the pinion bearing, which I'm guessing caused a small gap through which oil could get to the splines and then come out at the nut. Good thing there was no other damage. The spring stayed intact mostly, but I did fish out a few pieces of it with a magnet pen.

I replaced the seal and make sure the spring stayed in place this time, and put a generous amount of teflon sealant on the splines. Hopefully it won't leak this time!

I also installed a TA girdle/cover, what a beefy chunk of metal!
