Probably the intermediate steering shaft...common problem on the NBS trucks. Kind of makes a clunking in the front end and the steering wheel feels "loose" when they go bad.

The splines tend to go dry and bind up a bit causing noises when you stop and go or turn from left to right, or when ever the truck flexes.
If caught early enough it can be just "simply" regreased. If it is allowed to do it for a long period of time the shafts will then need to be replaced, due to excessive wear on the splines.
GM has had multiple problems with this since their Silverado makeover in 1999 to present.
My 2005 Silverado's intermediate shaft already had to be greased at 15,000mi.
Now you should know what an intermediate shaft is.
