Default I'm about to start looking for a 4L80E

I see them on craigslist but most of them are from 98 and 99 model trucks with vortec engines. Can I use one of these or is there a reason to find one that's newer?

Here's why I'm looking, at WOT, if I get into some pretty high RPMs, my transmission will just blow right by the shift point I have set in the tune. I'm pretty sure it's noting in the tune. It seems to do it more often than it used to. I have the limiter set to 7000 and it hits it so hard that it backfires. The check engine light flashes briefly and if I'm scanning, the scanner stops at that moment. I've even had it kill the engine. I'm sure I'm pushing the limits of my tranny but it's been pretty good to me so far. I thinks it's time to do the swap, though since I can't use it for what I built it for as it is.

Talk to me.

I went through 7 4l60s over the years before I finally wised up and went with the swap. Mine was out of a 97 Silverado. Do the swap and don't look back.

Hell yeah. I'm going to start digging up parts. So I guess all the electronics are the same even in the older ones? That's good news. It will be easy to find one.

I'd look at anything 94 and newer. Some 93 and ones older than that had a different case plug and wiring that is different. They also don't have the bosses for the neutral safety switch, ask me how I found that out.

97+ got a different lube design, you can tell a 97+ instantly by the rear cooler line being spaced about a foot behind the front cooler line. 96 and older are right on top of one another. Same say the 97+ is a better design, others like the older design better for lubrication.

99 and up have the 12 o' clock bolt hole to mate to LS engines, although ones without it work just fine.

There were other small changes around 2004, little improvements inside, I forget what they are now.

Thanks! That is exactly the info I was looking for. I'm going to call up my favorite junkyard tomorrow and see what they have to offer.I may have to pull it myself but I aint scared.

I like the 99 and newer ones. You can tell them by the 12 oclock bolt hole in the top of the bell housing, and the tranny lines being spaced apart. I now have 3 of them. 1 in my truck, and 2 more for other projects.
