Put it in manual 1 to start the burnout, once the tires get spinning shift it up to 3.

with tuning can you control what the shift actually does? i don't know exactly how it works with the 80e. with my 5r110 it stays in whatever gear the shifter is in, regardless. i know if i put my 80e in 1st it will only stay in 1st for so long at part throttle. it i have it in 2nd and come to a stop it seems to stay in 2nd.

Best bet is to start out in 2nd, and shift to 3rd as soon as possible (basically enough to not let the motor lug down). This is possible because a lot of PCMs do 2nd gear start with the shifter in 2.

What is the reasoning for this?

If you are spinning in 2nd gear and let off as the tires are starting to grab it can damage the sprag.

Yea I think the sprag is spinning the other direction at twice input speed...so if you let off at 6200 in 2nd, its spinning the other way at 12,400 and going from that fast to 0 in a very short time tends to break things.

Yep, the sprag doesn't like it.

Thanks for the burnout tips

Anyone have a comment on this?

You're not going to get a 1st gear shift point that really workable over 40mph. So no, at highway speed, you're probably going to hit 2nd instead.

You should have your 2-1 down shift setup to not allow the shift above 35-38mph and then it won't go all the way to 1st, just to 2nd. You don't want your trany to drop to a gear and then almost immediately shift out of it. It should drop to a gear where your right in the middle of the power curve for that gear. It's all in tuning

Over all, even in stock form the 80 is very tough! You don't have to treat it like its made out of glass, they will take some beating
