Default How do you remove the steering column clam shell?

2001 Suburban with tow/haul not working. How do you take off the clam shell without breaking it?

Thanks.

I am trying to figure this out myself. I keep getting stuck on the tilt lever. How does this thing come off? I need to replace my turn indicator switch.

The clamshells are difficult, but just pry apart after removing the screws from the bottom half. To be done correctly, the steering wheel should be removed, but if you are very careful, you can sneak them in & out. Be warned, if you break off the hazard switch, things just got expensive.

The tilt lever just pops out of the column.

Remove 3 20 Screws from bottom. Then it will unclip from the front closest to the steering wheel. There are clips on the back side that will rotate. The ignition lock cylinder has to be removed to get the top piece off if it has a the 360 degree bezel. The later ones are split in half with no screws.

Lock cylinder does not have to come out on a 2001.
