Thnanks for the help, the new shaft is in. Had a little trouble getting both ends in at the same time, had to manipulate the steering wheel, turning it go get everything to align....the service bulleting says to lock the wheel but that didnt work for me so i just turned it a bit when putting the new shaft in to get everything in.......the new shaft is great and NO CLUNKING so far....steering feels a little tighter, could just be my imagination though......also when removing the shaft/putting the new one in, make sure they are compressed all the way or else no dice...

I have had a few of them, including a couple new ones. They all went bad eventually, the one on there now has been clunking for a while now. I plan on just adding a grease fitting to it.

Where exactly does the grease go? At the top between the i-shaft and the steering wheel shaft, or at the bottom, between the i-shaft and the lower steering input shaft?

My bolts were not fully tightened. I added grease at the top, but I don't think that did anything. I tightened the bolts and the clunk was gone. It has redeveloped very slightly, but nothing like it was.

I have fixed dozens of these by using a GM product called Superlube. It is a aerosol spray that turns into grease. It can be done in the engine compartment. Just remove the 15mm bolt and the U clip inside the shaft. Spray the grease inside while moving the shaft in and out. The problem in using thick grease is it does not get in between the 2 shafts. As they slide the thick grease gets pushed away. When the shaft gos dry it makes the noise.

Thanks for the info, Mrgoodwrench3. I'll try it again with the grease at the lower end.

If you want to spend the money instead of always greasing THIS IS THE WAY TO GO!!

So I just put on my Borgeson steering shaft mentioned above, (would not install initially until set screws were adjusted on shaft) and I can tell that the steering is def a little more heavy (not a bad thing)...but here is my issue, I STILL have the clunk...especially when on an incline and locking the wheel to one side while turning....

Anyone have any other ideas as to what this could be? suspension or something else in the steering?

Don't know what to tell ya. I replaced mine with the latest redesign and haven't had any problems in over 100,000 miles.
