Hard shifting 4L80E after overhaul
#1
I got my 80e rebuilt and it seemed fine for about 20 miles. Since then the shifts into 2nd and 3rd keep getting harsher, especially at low throttle settings. I put a pressure gauge on and it's running a steady 125psi and increasing to 150 or so at higher power. I can't get the builder to look at it for awhile and was wondering what might be causing this. It's starting to worry me. The hard banging shifts feel terrible.

Can you turn down the shift pressure? I made the mistake of forgetting to pull pressure out of my shifts in the tune when i rebuilt mine...the shifts were anything but comfortable. Stock settings fixed that though.

I would see if your builder has a breakout box like a tranx to hook up to your trans to see if he can control line pressure right at the main connector of the trans. This would take the vehicle and its controls out of the equation and help you decide if the trans is the issue or the vehicle. 125psi in fwd at idle is way to high and should be more like 70-80psi in drive. WOT should be 175-200psi max. Vince

Well ****, that sucks man. I hate it when a builder doesn't get something right, then fails to make it right.
I wish I could offer some help, but I don't have much expertise to offer.

Was reading about adjusting the force motor too. That might be an option. I can't get a straight answer about what all he did to the transmission so I might have to guess at a few things. I'm hoping Vince will offer some tips.

I would start with replacing the force motor and then see where the pressure is at at idle and wot. Its a trick some builders will do to firm up the shifts. However more than a 1//4-1/2 turn can really jack these things up. You could try to adjust the one you have currently by turning the screw counter clockwise but IMO an epc should be replaced at the time of an overhaul. This way with a new OEM solenoid you will have a fresh start. HTH Vince

I would suggest doing the epc first. Your pressures in an earlier post seemed high IMO if that was in gear at idle. This way you might not have to mess with pulling the valve body and all. The epc is a quick change once the pan is off. Just make sure to get the bracket and the solenoid in the correct position.
