Default G-80

I know there is not many of you guys that like the G-80. But it saved my butt friday night.. I was turning Right off the paved road and my front driver tire went off the road into the ditch by a covert. The Passenger rear tire was off the ground, I felt it when my frame hit the asphalt. The rear of the truck was still stickin out in the road. Thought OH CRAP....... But i put it in reverse and eased on it. The G-80 locked up and i pulled out of the ditch with just one TOYO PROXES S/T touching the ground for traction. If i would have gotten the EATON LSD then i prob would have been screwed.

What other Diff could i get that will lockup when i get in a situation like this one??

Thanks GM for puttin a locker in these trucks for us under powered guys!! haha.

Later guys!

Having a good diff in the rear certainly does come in handy when it's needed. Glad you got out of the ditch.

Since I'm a late comer to the game, what are people's gripes about the G80 diff? I want to learn as much as I can so my mod money is well spent.

they are good for stock applications as gm didnt know you were gonna mod out to 300 or better rwhp so as most will end up doing is change it out for a hd lsd...alot of em have been totally trashed and some of em just stop spinning both wheels and go into a 1 wheel peel which is not good at almost 120' out and the 1-2 shift throws you into a side ways slide

A Trutrack should have but a detroit locker definately would have. The eaton may have done more than you give it cedit for. The clutches wouldn't have liked you afterwards though

I recently swapped my POS 7.5" 10-bolt w/ a Zexel Torsen out of my Z28. Put in a 9" rear with a TrueTrac. I love that diff so far.

Anyway, back on topic...I'm starting to see GM really lacking in the rear axle department.

The trucks don't have a problem with the upgraded 10 bolt 8.5 or the 9.5 14 bolt in the denalis, 1500 HD and 2500's. The G80 is pretty much crap for performance. It is great for getting your farm truck out of wet grass.

BTW- Parish went a 10.08 and put down over 1000rwhp through the stock rear with G80. The G80 blows when you give it hell on an uneven traction surface and one side slips a lot and it engages, for the most part. I have a 2000 model G80 in my 95 1500 and I hate it.
