Default drivetrain problem in 2000 gmc 2500 6.0 80e

truck has floor shift 4wd
when its in there sometimes while turning on grass or dirt it binds up and pops out like into neutral(like the front/rear binds up and the front pops loose but rear still drive)...we though it aws the noid in the front diff that actuates the locker...
fast foroward

here it is like a year later we havent used 4wd...well the truck started to make a noise underneath...so i jacked it up and foud out it was the t-case while driving making a noise...i checked it and it was a quart and a half low...i filled it and it doesnt make noise anymore...but not when letting off the gas and slowing down it feels like something is trying to bind up...like teeth inside it are hittin tip to tip....

2 questions, im hoping it was the t-case binging up a long time ago and not the front diff
and 2 whats a rebuild run on a t-case if i pull and install it just have a shop do a build? just a ballpark (i.e. 500-1200)

edit: also it clunks from drive to reverse and such

Honestly if you ran it low on fluid, you might just want to replace it. Usually when those transfer cases go out, they screw up everything. Also the oil pump retainer will work its way loose and rub a hole in the top part of the back case, which might be why it was low on fluid. You can get a GM one with a 3 year 100k warranty for about 1000-1200
