Default difference in 60s

My buddy has a s10 and he just bought a 5.3 with 40,xxx miles on it to go in it. He asked me if the trans behind 2.2 liter would work and I told him I didn't know but I figured it won't hold up because it was originally built for a 2.2 and not a v8. So I figured I'd see what needs to happen. Does it need new internals to hold v8 power?

What year is the vehicle? IMO it would be more work than it would be worth and would probably just get an LS1 style unit to start with.
