did this load cause this oil leak?

Filter wrenches damage filters. They also overtorque them, which makes removing the filter later, a major PITA. Or in Billy's case, a major PIT-*******...
General rule of thumb, if you can't get the filter tight enough by hand to not leak, maybe your man-card needs pulled...

But yes, the wrenches are mainly for filter removal, and the installation tool is that thing that sticks out of your sleeve with the five digits on it (granted that you can get your big paws to fit in there

Wait, that's off topic.
I only use tools on the filters when they're hot or near a hot surface, I'm a complete weenie when it comes to hot stuff.

I'll bet my SnapOn tool box that you fixed the leak, that pierced filter would/did make a hell of a mess. Just clean it up and keep an eye on it, but I'm sure you'll be fine

I've been waning to get me a set of these for years and years now, but always seem to forget when the SnapOn guy shows up and distracts me with all of his goodies that are on special
:HS700A, Arm Protector, Hot Sleeve
I'm sure that you can find them cheaper on the net if you search google...not sure about the SnapOn ones, but I believe that others are made of kevlar or nomex or something
I just wear a long sleeve shirt and put some gloves on when I'm forced to work on a piping hot vehicle. When I change my oil, I like to do it with the truck piping hot so that as much of the sludge that's floating around in there showers out with the flowing oil. I usually just use the tips of my fingers to remove the drain plug, or sometimes have a rag in my hand for the last few threads. When the drain plug come out, I quickly move my hand out of the way to avoid getting burned by the screaming hot oil, but usually get a little bath on my hand and fingers, which I quickly wipe off.
I'm hypersensitive myself, and definitely feel the heat, but can take it for a second or two
