Crossmember clearance
#1
I asked this question in the classic trucks section, but haven't gotten any replies yet. Thought I would try it here where a few more people may see it. On the 73-87 chevy trucks, how much to you need to "Z" the frame to keep the front crossmember from dragging the ground when you lower or bag your truck?

I read Porterbilt has a front crossmember kit that will just about get you where you want with a safer frame. Also Air Ride Tech has many parts too.
I helped a friend cut up his frame years ago BM "before Marriage".
He already had the rims and tires he wanted so he had done the rear-end before I got there which is the easiest. So when we got to the front with the new drop arms, drop spindles, and tires we only had to remove the cross member and Z the frame 3 inch's.
We took measurements of everything drew them on paper, and when everything was analized. We transfered all the knowledge we gained to a bigger posterboard from which we planned our assault.
Also get to know tech support at flaming river well becouse Z-ing a frame messes with steering in ways un-imagineable.
But while our system worked very well that was then this is now. I would go and buy a kit the modify the frame afterwards to go all the way.

Thanks for the input guys. I just signed up on gmfullsize.com. I have looked into different crossmember options, and the porterbilt crossmember is around $1400 for the crossmember alone and to use your stock control arms you have to modify the the uppers. But for around $3-4000 you can pick up a complete crossmember kit from a few different places. I'm just trying to do some research so I can consider all options.
