Default Converter for towing

Hey folks, i have a stock 5.3L 2004 Tahoe 4x4, looking for a good converter to help with towing a 28' Enclosed trailer.
I plan to do a cam/head swap in the future as well and could use some recommendations?

also, has anyone towed an enclosed 26-28' trailer with their 5.3 truck and their car in it? i have yet to try with this truck

Yank Truck Thruster series would be my suggestion for a converter along with a really big trans cooler. You're definitely going to need the cooler with that size trailer behind you anyway.

Hmm- that Truck Thruster looks good. One question, however- when I'm cruising at 74MPH @ 1950RPM- isn't that 2,600 stall converter slipping like a ****? I was always under the impression that you should always cruise at a higher RPM than the stall of the converter. One last thing, I've seen some pretty cute tranny coolers- what looks like a small, in- line radiator, even one with a fan on it...........

The 4L60/5E's have a lockup TC. It is usually programmed to lock in OD at 50mph if under light acceleration. The TT3000 will lug at 1500rpm in my truck in OD. Up to 50mph it will slip some but with a NA 5.3 a TT3000 would only flash to about 2500rpm. You would need alot more torque to flash it to 3000.

OK- I think I'm grasping the role of the TQ. But one more Q, if the TQ locks up after what 50- why the need for an additinal cooler............

I tow a 24ft. enclose with mine. I would recommend a tighter stall around 2,000-2400. Mine is a 3,000 stall and will get warm if there is a lot of stop and go. If your not running big hills you should be fine. A stock stall would be the best for towing IMO.

For the weight of the tahoe, and the size of the trailer you plan to pull, I would NOT put an aftermarket high stall converter in there! The stock converter stalls in the range you want it to for towing.

You will definitely want to put a bigger cooler on there, though. It will see some dangerously high temps without one. Unless you are towing across perfectly flat land, I would stay out of OD while towing that much with the stock setup. Ask me how I know

I would recommend a trans temp gage too.

Good luck!
