I talked to a reputable converter builder yesterday and he is pretty sure the clutch dampener has come apart explaining the free spinning parts. I also went ahead and ordered a new converter that should work much better for my setup so I am pretty excited about that. He is also sending me some Sonnax parts that supposedly fix some TCC circuit issues in the 80 that the Transgo HD-2 dosen't address.

Still doesn't explain why the TCC solenoid isn't clicking when I apply it via HPT. I will look deeper into that once I get it on the bench.

UPDATE:
I got my new FTI 10.5" converter in and running over the weekend. I have lockup again. While the trans was out I removed the PWM/TCC solinoid and cleaned out the valve bore before reinstalling. I could turn the old converter and hear stuff rattling around in it so previous speculation is probably true. So far the FTI is great. Much tighter at part throttle and hits harder when I put my foot in it. First and second are absolutely useless on the street at any throttle possition once it goes into boost. My 305/45/18 Nittos hate me now.

Hey Kid did you pull the pump to see if any of the metal got into it and caused any damage? How was the oil pan? With a converter coming apart I would be a bit concerned. Then again you probably have zippers holding that thing in there by now! Kidding! Vince

I know I should have but based on what I saw in the pan, I figured it was ok. Nothing came out of the converter when I drained it either. I have been driving it all week and so far every thing is kosher. If I had some debris in the pump or pump damage, wouldn't it be obvious from the first drive?

You are right though, I've got these tranny jobs down to an art.

Once you go to AN fittins and braided lines a trans swap is so much easier not having to fight the cooler lines to get the starter out or those damn Eclips. If mine wasnt 4wd I bet I could have it out in an hour. Im sure by now youre fairly close to that time frame also, although Im not quite sure thats something to brag about
