Default Changing Tranny Fluid/Filter

My truck has 125000 miles on it and i dont think its ever had the tranny fluid change.. So i want to change the fluid and filter.
I think i want to go with Royal Purple Fluid depending on how many quarts i need.

How much tranny fluid do i need?
I checked on a filter at Oriellys and there are two options. (forgot what they said) and i saw on here that gm has a deep oil pan and a regular one i guess. how do i know which one i have?

well i work at oreilly's and its probably the 745032 i believe is the pn. it's most likely the shallow pan. as far as fluid goes, it's up to you. i'm sure others might chime in on the type but i think it takes 5 qt if you have a 4l60

The easiest way to tell if its the shallow or deep pan is if you have the towing package with the separate tranny cooler. If you do, then you have the deep pan. Or you could just buy both and bring which ever one you dont use back. As far as the fluid cap, just a filter change is usually about 5 qts. But with that many miles, I dont think I would even mess with it. Some more experinced transmission guys will have to chime in on this one but with that many miles, especially if your kind of hard on it, it probably doesnt have that much life left before it will need a rebuild and changing the fluid and filter will most likely make it happen faster. I have changed out quite a few 4L60E's with burnt 3-4 clutches or blown converters with close to 100,00 miles. But, like I said, you will really need the oppinion of a more experienced transmission tech. BTW, I am in the process of rebuilding my 4L60E right now (burnt 3-4 clutches) My truck has 99,580 miles. Someone else put the first 75,000 on it for me. That may also be a consideration if you bought the truck used.

You should have the deep pan with that truck. With that kind of miles you will probably kill it.

No, not all of them are deep after '98. I have an '01 Sierra 5.3 ECSB w/out the towing package and my tranny has the shallow pan. You could also measure it, I think O'Reilly's tells you the depth (measured on the outside).

My truck has the deep pan and it has a step to it where the y-pipe crosses over it...I don't believe that the shallow pans are stepped, maybe if someone knows for sure they can chime in. If that's the case, just look at the pan, if it's stepped, it's deep, if not, it's shallow. These trucks could come with either pan...when I did my first fluid and filter change, first question the guy at the parts counter asked me was "deep pan or shallow?"

i think it's 2 1/8 vs 2 7/8. i could be mistaken. the most common filter is the shallow one tho. i sell it almost everyday with no returns
