Default Bye Bye 4L60 (just Blew out 2/4)

Hey Guys,

I was driving down the hwy and stepped on the gas to pass a semi. My tires slipped or the tranny did and I felt/heard two loud clonks. I now don't have 2 or 4th gear. Tranny is still under warrraty and I haven't made it to any of the internal mods yet....I only have bolt ons and 72K miles. Is this typical?

What do you guys think happened to the tranny? What broke?

Also, Is there anything smart I can do while the truck is at the dealership? I.E. Pay the guy to put in a 4L80 instead? I wonder what my options are.

Thanks

Lance

IMO u shouldnt have any problems with the 60e if u only have bolt-ons and a 80e swap would jus be pointless and lots of money.

I suspect you did a 4 to 2 downshift. That downshift is really hard on the transmission from what I understand. Sounds like you broke/burnt the band.

I'm 99% sure the dealership won't swap in a 4l80e. Even if they take the time to fab up everything, I don't know if there is programming to do it. I don't think any GMT900s came with the 4l80e. Maybe a van or something? And they can't do a segment swaps as we know them.

Only thing 2nd and 4th have in common is the band, so the problem has something to do with that. 2007's are real bad about breaking the forward sprag, and GM finally has a double cage sprag to replace it. So ask the technician to at least replace that while it's apart. And there's no way they are swapping in an 4L80e for ya, lol.

I figured it was a long shot to have 4L80 swapped it. I actually thought it was a drop in, but I guess not now that I look into it. I think a built 4L60 is better for me. Because I will be doing more than just bolt ons.

I just wish that GM could give me a credit for the work they are doing so I could just go buy a FLT or something and drop in a stall while the tranny is down.

Don't suppose the Dealership would be open to putting in a shift kit on a warranted truck, do you?

At least have them redo the entire trans, then sell it as a new trans once they're done. That'll offset the cost of a built trans

I am not starting a battle but I am now on my 3ed 4L60E with just headers back tune and cold air intake. I have 35" tires tho. The last one only lasted 11000 miles, that one was built by GM as well under warranty also but this time I did not have a warranty. Just GM does not up grade there parts like after market would it's a weak link in these trucks.

Good luck with everything Lance!
