Budget brake upgrade for 2000 Silverado. (05+ front, SUV rear)
So I'm wanting to do a brake upgrade on my 2000 Silverado. I've been searching around and have found there is a "budget" brake upgrade.
You would take the front calipers from a 2005+ Silverado and the rears from a 2000-06 Suburban, Tahoe, Escalade, etc. (2 piston) I called my local Autozone and I can order "loaded" calipers for about 100.00 per wheel. The loaded calipers come with brake pads but more importantly, caliper's brackets. The core charge is 47.00 per wheel. So I'm looking at about 600.00 to replace/upgrade my calipers. (Still need rotors.) While I'm doing this I'm also planning on stainless steel braided lines and going hydro boost. Does anyone have the correct part numbers and source the do this cheaper? (Calipers, brackets, rotors...) Anyone know what the correct part numbers for the braided lines are? Thanks everyone! |
Cant really help with the part numbers but i will say something else i found out about doing the rear brakes is you can get the rear calipers and rotors from a Z71 suburban or tahoe and the roters will be wider by a few mm, which would help braking even more.. when i upgrade my rear brakes ill be getting the parts from a Z71.. after all the upgrades you are about to do, ou brakes will be a completely different animal.. all i have done so far are the ss braided lines and that helped out pretty good.. i hope to do hydroboost on mine in a few weeks.
Good luck and let us know how it works out. |
I know I'm a cheap skate, but my budget brake upgrade looks like its going to cost me around a 1000.00!
Each caliper and rotor costs about 100.00. That's 800.00 plus the stainless steel braided lines. I haven't found those part numbers yet but I figure they'll be about 150.00. Front loaded calipers: Drivers side RC11714 Passengers side RC11713 Rear loaded calipers: Drivers side RC11169 Passengers side RC11170 |
its gotta be cheaper then that have you called around to any salvage yards instead of new but if its got low miles might save you some dough too
|
Does that number have your hydroboost parts figured in too? Its deff not gonna be cheap to do all 4 corners at one time but i think you would be really happy with the end result from the way other guys talk about these mods.. also dont forget you need atleast 17" rims up front to clear those calipers, just throwing that out there in case you didnt know.
|
Thanks guys.
Yeah, I've got 20" wheels so that's no problem. Each caliper costs around 100.00. Each rotor costs around 100.00. Then there's the 50.00 core charge for each caliper. I have found that the calipers are around 89.00 each if you order them on eBay. That would save some cash. I was considering going the junkyard route. I found a guy on Craigslist that will sell the rear calipers for 100.00. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to try to rebuild them myself. Trying to find low mileage rear calipers would be tough. LOL! The hydro boost parts I need are the hoses and the brake pedal. About 100.00 worth of parts. I need to look up the braided lines. |
I've been searching and cross referencing part numbers for hours. I think I've found the cheapest way to put this together.
The cheapest place to find everything seems to be eBay. The calipers are about the same price as Autozone, but with no core charge. I think I may just go through Autozone and deal with the core charge though. Autozone has a decent rewards program and if anything screws up with thr calipers I can return it locally. Here are all the part numbers I've came up with: Front loaded calipers: (05+) Drivers side RC11714 Passengers side RC11713 Rear loaded calipers: (SUV dual piston) Drivers side RC11169 Passengers side RC11170 Centric rotors: (05+) Front 120.66057 (SUV) Rear 120.66045 Russell stainless steel braided brake lines: (For my 2000 Silverado) 672430 Russell Performance - Truck/SUV Brake Hose Now those rotors above are the non-slotted versions. If you want the "Powerslot" versions here are those part numbers: Front 126.66057SR 126.66957SL Rear 126.66045SR 126.66045SL Bare in mind, there is a 40.00 per rotor price increase for slotted. Is it with an additional 160.00 for slotted rotors? So if I ordered everything through eBay and the Russell SS kit through Summit, my total would be 772.00 shipped. Then I'll need the hoses to hook up hydro boost and the correct brake pedal. Those part numbers if you're interested. Hydro boost Pedal 15906961 Hydroboost Lines 15295853 15804952 15295840 Does anyone know if they make a hydro boost rebuild kit? I thought I remember reading about it. I figure I may as well do that while it's out. |
Oh, I wanted to ad this in too.
So from the factory 1999-2006 trucks come with 12" front brakes. You can upgrade to 13" brakes by bolting on 05+ front calipers. As stated above that would cost around 720.00. If you wanted you could go with 14" rotors by using a SSBC kit. Here: SSBC:: A126-47 The kit is 500.00. Roughly the total would be 1100.00. To go to 15" brakes you can run Z06 6 piston calipers with adapter brackets. The brakes are freekin awesome. To buy all the stuff to make that happen would be around 2500.00. So, 12" brakes = no cost 13" brakes = 700.00 14" brakes = 1100.00 15" brakes = 2500.00 That seems crazy to me. Each inch you add the price doubles. LMAO! |
I did this upgrade on my silverado before i sold it, the entire upgrade costed me about 600 for everything new, ordered suburban loaded dual piston calipers, and rotors, and they accepted my stock single piston calipers as a core, best upgrade I did for stopping power, without the abs and I could lockup the rear tires on command, or bring the truck to a quick stop with minimal effort
|
You should be able to find rotor for cheaper than that at any parts store.. you should be able to get them for $60-$80.. I would also look on RockAuto Auto Parts for your rotors since its very likely they will fail and you'll have to return them.. but i would try to get calipers and stuff local so they would be easy to return.
|
Have you tried rockauto for the calapers? Looks like their $75 for loaded calapers and the rotors are about 35. That should help shave alittle cash.
|
I upgraded my rear brakes and the best deal was a result of buying loaded calipers from rockauto and rotors from Advance Auto Parts. Twas pretty cheap...
|
I went with the dimpled and slotted from brakeperformance.....
|
If it was me, i wouldnt mess with drilled rotors.. gettem just hot enough and they'll crack and warp pretty easy.. At the MAX i would do slotted, but if i was buying them to go on my truck i would just stick with the plain rotors.. But thats just my opinion.. I would deff check rock auto though, they have great prices.

Did the 05+ calipers ($40 at local auto yard, IIRC), powerslot rotors all around, hydroboost conversion (cost $80 at the auto yard, thanks Atomic for the step by step guide), and Goodrich stainless lines all at once. Night and day difference, didn't know a 5000+lb SUV could stop this well.
Personally, I would do hydroboost first, then go from there. Hydroboost makes a significant difference in stopping power and required effort. You might be happy after that alone, and save yourself a few hundred dollars over going with bigger rotors. |
The most bang for your buck upgrade I did was Slotted rotors from fleabay. Did nothing else and cut 60-0 by 30%. 250.00 or less and plated so they look nice for a long time. All 4.

I was looking at the calipers for the suburban with 9900 gvw. I'll get part numbers when I get home.
Ok I so the quote doesn't have it labeled fr and rr, but the calipers for the front are from an 05 Silverado and the rear are from a 3/4 Suburban 4x4 same year. They are new Wagner wih thermo-quite pads w/ bracket. Ok here are e part numbers with prices: Calipers TQ25433- $73.70 TQ25432- $73.70 TQ25365- $79.80 TQ25364- $79.80 Rotors- house brand 2x 580279RGS- $94.22 for both 2x 580165RGS- $76.56 for both For a total of $477.78, I think he did it under a shop prices but not sure. All part numbers are from Orielly auto parts. Hopes this helps out. |

So '05 front calipers and rotors are 13", and 99-02 are 12"?
What about using eBay rotors? They are decent looking and pretty cheap. |
Cheap is cheap But I would recomend having them turned before installing them. It's a 50/50 shot at getting a set thats withen spec on the run out. Even on premuim rotors, we always found the best results by turning them prior to installing them.

BTW I have 2 sets of take off calipers with cages and Brake lines.

My local NAPA has A1 Cardone calipers, and they were $68 with the core. The part number they gave me doesn't get any hits online though. Summit and eBay have Cardone calipers for like $40 though. Cardone Industries 100-18B4919 - A1 Cardone Remanufactured Brake Calipers - Overview - SummitRacing.com |
I did the Hydroboost conversion and Braided lines and that was more than enough braking for my truck IMO.
|
$100 can even throw in some used rotors that should be turnable if you want to swing by and pick them up.
|
Read the fine print Summit may be $40 Each but they also have a $50 core charge EACH...

Not on a 3/4 ton.
The Suburban rotors when I looked up the part number it was for an 07 Z71 Suburban. |
Well I went junkyard shopping today. I had the intention of picking up front calipers/brackets from 05+ 1500 Silverado, rear calipers/brackets from 99-06 Tahoe and hydroboost lines from what ever I could find them in.
I ended up finding the hydroboost lines but didn't have the correctly sized tools to remove them so I ended up picking up just the low pressure return line. They didn't have an 05+ Silverado so I couldn't get the front calipers. They did however have 2 2001 Tahoes. So I ended up getting the rear calipers. As a bonus I noticed the rear rotors looked brand new. So I picked them up. I took them to my local machinist to have them turned. They measured in at 1.80. Brand new is 1.81! Looks like this Tahoe had a recent brake job. I'm temped to even run the brake pads. LOL! So I picked up rear rotors, calipers, brackets, brake pads, and one of the hydroboost lines for 80.00. Woot! On my way back I noticed a 2002 2500 that was recently brought in. It was rear-ended. It has perfect leather interior that matches my trucks interior. I asked the guy how much it would cost for the seats and console. I was expecting it would be expensive. I've seen seats go for 400.00. He said 75.00 a seat and 50.00 for the console. I told him I'll be back tomorrow! |
Very nice!

I went to the wrecking yard today and grabbed a brake pedal for the hydroboost swap. Ended up costing me 10.00. I'm just going to order the high pressure lines from acdelco. They're kind of a pain to remove and I'd rather just pay for the new ones.
I tried to find used front calipers. My local yard didn't have one so I headed to the next town over. The new junkyard wouldn't let me walk the yard. The guy told me they don't sell used calipers because they can't warranty them. WTF?!? So I guess I'll be ordering loaded calipers from autozone for the front. I still need to figure out the difference between regular rotors and severe duty rioters? |

Did you encounter any issues connecting up the hydroboost lines with the rack and pinion?
EDIT: From what I've read, if you use hydroboost supply lines from a 2005 express van you'll be golden. Hope this helps. |
So let's tally this sucker up!!
Rear calipers/rotors and one hydroboost line from junkyard. 80.00 Having the rotors turned. 32.00. Rear brake pads. 25.80 eBay Part number 301.08340 Front rotors from amazon. 61.74 each Part number 120.66057 Remaining 2 hydroboost lines from amazon. 176-1375 37.68 36-365466 29.77 Hydroboost from Craigslist. 50.00 Russel braided lines from amazon. 133.39 Part number 672430 Hydroboost specific brake pedal from junkyard. 10.00 Part number 15906961 Front loaded calipers from autozone. 200.00 Part numbers RC11714 & RC11713 Brake fluid 722.12 + brake fluid So that's everything. I'll have a completely new braking system with slightly larger rotors and dual piston calipers in the rear. All factory stuff from a dozen or so different places. LOL. It only cost me 722.12. I guess that's not too terrible. |
I think you'll be happy with the results. I have the 12" front setup and 13" dual piston rear setup stock (01 C3), and recently swapped to hydroboost. It's got plenty of stopping power, but when my fronts are low, I'll be swapping them to the 05+ (drum rear) 13" front setup.
|
You'll deff be happy after the swap.. sounds like alot of work ahead of you but well worth it.. let us know how it turns out.
|
To bad you dont know somebody who works at the auto parts store.
