Booted is for 1 piece drive shafts. Non-booted is for 2 piece shafts.
Do not use a booted seal on a 2 piece shaft. It will rip the boot right off and has a potential to spin the seal in the housing.
The boot is to keep dirt, grease, and grime off the yoke because on 1 piece shafts, the travel is at the yoke. On 2 piece shafts the travel is in the shaft itself, so there is no need for a boot. The yoke is basically stationary.
