It rides stiff now that Caltracs were added?
Or did u mean it rode stiff before too?
You know they say to specify if running the Hotchkis drop?
Something bout the front bushing is different. I figure if anything, the Caltracs are gonna ride stiff cause of the aluminum bushing.

Tom, Cal tracs only come with the aluminum bushings. I've installed two sets already, including my own truck. The bushing really isn't what sharpens the ride, in my opinion. When the suspension compresses(over a bump), the horizontal bar canti-levers on the front spring bolt, subsequently pushing down on the top of the leaf spring(behind the spring eye), which effectively makes the leaf spring shorter. That makes it ride sharper.

To answer the OP's question, by design, the leaf spring under the axle is better than over the axle, for launching. It's all about how much leverage the axle has against the spring, creating axle-wrap. I think either setup would ride about the same.
