ACE Racing 4L80 Initial Impression
#12
I'm glad the higher 2.48:1 1st gear doesn't bother you as much as you thought it would.
I have to remember that the th-400 used a 2.48:1 1st gear and the th-350 used a similar 2.52:1 1st gear as well and those 1st gears didn't bother me at the time.
IMO the short 3.06 was partly a fuel economy strategy to allow acceleration from stops with lower TPS %'s and to give the sense of faster acceleration. But the huge rpm drop into 2nd kills that feeling. Swapping from a 700r4/4l60e in an F-body to a th-350 is worth 3-4 tenths in the 1/4 due to the better gear spacing of the th350.
It would be a perfect world if the th-4l80e had the ratios of the 200r4 with is 2.74:1 1st and 0.67:1 OD.
