Default 6L80e rebuild in N. Texas - Recommendation

A co-worker has a 2017 Silverado. Last week he told me his truck was in the shop because of some grinding noise. 104k on the clock. His mechanic just told him it needs a to be rebuilt. I don't know how it was diagnosed, but he said his mechanic is pretty good and honest and he can trust him.

He was asking me for recommendations: local shop recommendation, vs on-line such as FinishLine, etc. I told him I've seen some guys also tweak stuff on HP Tuners...But I'm just not familiar with the 6L-series. Does anyone know a local reputable shop in the North Texas area? This is just for reliable commuter vehicle. Basically stock truck.

Is the torque converter, the pistons that are prone to cracking and a tune the basic issues with the 6Ls? What else fails on them? I think he was planning on doing the full DOD/AFM delete in the near future. Bummer.

Your advice is much appreciated.

I have a 6l80 at Phoenix Transmission in Weatherford, they are pretty straight forward when it comes to information. a couple of my friends have used them and are happy with the work.

Thank you. I will pass on the information.

Do you recall if you had the cooler thermostat bypass done on your unit?

No, I gave them no directions other than rebuild it, they said they were going to do some "fixes" they usually do to the 6l80s they get. Probably some factory issues getting corrected.

AMP uses Chase Dooley for high hp builds. No idea if he does stock but seems very reasonable and easy to deal with.

If it's the same Phoenix transmission that use to build 4L80's back in the day for TBSS's I'd say he'd be in good hands if their reputation is what it was.

What sort of price are they quoting and back to stock build? Not many places around me and I have thought about using them when the time comes.

Better than the 5k for a reman that a couple people I know had done. Which the shop also installed too so I guess it had a bit of labor too.
