But with it in the pan or return line you are getting a static reading before the the pump sucks it up through the filter and the cycle begins. If the fluid is getting too hot somewhere between the filter and the cooler outlet something is malfunctioning and hot trans temps are a result of that.

the fluid heats up regardless of a problem between the filter and the cooler. Do you even know what a transmission is or what it does?
