I paid 850 for an 04 2wd version and they are harder to come by than the 4x4 version...At least around here they are.

Paid $900 for a 98 with 50K on it along with NP241 transfer case, front drive shaft and rear yoke.
Cost $1500 to ship though!
I believe 2002 onwards has all the updates.

91-96 4l80e will work. the oil lines are both in the front of the trans so your stock lines will hook right up. After 01 You get a better overrun clutch, but I don't think it's worth it to pass up a good deal on a previous version. FWi, Vince @ FLT like the early design better. And you can always up grade the overrun assy.
The 05 and newer trans could have the 5 pinion planetary in the reaction carrier (4l85e) but who has blown up a planetary in a 80e? (besides me)

The fact is even with all the changes that has happened to the 4l80e, 90% of the changes can be adapted to the older versions.
The only thing you have to look out for on the early design 80e, is make sure the trans has the bosses to mount the neutral safety switch assy.

As for value IMHO
94-96 700-1000
97-00 800-1000 larger planetary gears in the reaction carrier, new valve body
01-04 900-1200 Larger second band, redesigned overrun assy
05 and newer with strait cut gears 1200-1500

Good luck and welcome to the hevy pig of a trans that never slips club

Good info guys.

Looks like I'm the proud owner of a 2005 80e, with TC, 6000 miles. Paid 900 and going to cost about 160 bucks to ship it. Now onto the other necessities to do the swap. Have a flex plate and spacer.

None of you guys wanted the one I was selling on here so I gave away an '05 80e with less than 1500 miles on it. Traded it for an engine swap
