Well I've try my cluster in another truck & it never got above 180. I let the truck idle for a hour & half & temp stayed @ 150. So I turn on the a/c & it climb to 180. Fluid is still pretty & pink. I made a hour drive last night & temp got up to 275 again. So I dog on it & it still shift perfect. I know I should check it with a heat gun, but i would just like some input on what could be causing this. I'm 750 miles away from home & it's bugging the shit out of me. If it will get me home. Transmission gods where y'all at???

bad temp sensor. A 80e wont make it much past 225*. Fluid would smell like burnt clutch at that temp.

Anyone ever change the internal harness on the 80e? Does the valve body have to be removed? |
The harness can be swapped without removing the valve body. I read your thread earlier and it seems that the issue is not with the trans from what you have said. I guess when you drop the pan if there is an issue with the trans you will see signs of it. Good luck. Vince

the fluid would smell bad enough to make you wanna puke if it got that hot.
just pull the dipstick and take a sniff. |
Thanks for the advise guys. With y'all saying if it was that hot it would be burnt makes me feel at ease. I'm going to try the manifold pressure switch first & see if that fixes the problem.

Are you certain that the converter is locking up? If it is not, then it will hang out on the stator and that itself will generate heat.
Keep this in mind... the transmission does not generate any heat per se'. It is simply parts rotating right? The heat in a transmission is generated by fluid shear from the torque converter. Fluid leave the converter, immediately goes to the cooler then is returned as lube fluid for the tranny rotating assembly. Therefore, if the cooler flow is not adequate or blocked, then the unit will overheat. Aaand if the converter clutch is not being applied then it will generate heat long term which can cause temperature related issues. Hope that helps... g |
Yep I'm sure the converter is locking up rpms around 2200 @ 70mph. On my way out to west Texas, when I was driving through to Houston temp had got up to 200deg, then by Austin it was @ 250deg & the hot transmission flashed across the board. I keep driving it till I got to big spring. And it stayed @ 245 to 250.
Sorry in all the other post were I say it's 275 degs it only 250. |
sounds like you need to just go ahead and do a motor swap so you can have something fast :jest:
keep this thread updated on what you find out for the future... |
YESSSSS.
finally someone else has the issue i have since i swapped my 80e in. i never got anywhere with people helping me on ideas. i found ac deco internal harnesses for 90 bucks btw. don't know if cheaper somewhere else but let me know. i didn't fix it yet i just don't drive it far. mine will show trans hot and i can grab the cooler lines and hold them lol. also mine starts off shown its over 100 degrees even after sitting all night. |
