4L80E Swap Crossmember Mod (pics)

As some of you know, sharpshooter and I are swapping to FLT Level 4-4L80E's. We finished his truck up a couple of weeks ago. I'm in the process of getting my truck cometely ready for when the tranny gets here. Pretty much the only thing I have left to do is the wiring for the speed sensor, which will be done this weekend. I worked on my crossmember today, so I thought I'd post up a few pics. I'll post up more tomorrow after it's painted. I used an 8" piece of 1/4" angle iron. It's welded on the crossmember, and the two holes attached to the crossmember is where 1/2" grade 8 bolts will also help hold it for insurance.

Keep your brain open, I am going to be picking it soon, about the wiring and all needed to be done to make the 4l80 a home in the 60 spot..

No problem man. It's ALOT easier for you cause you're 2WD!

iamkeniff 09-02-2011 05:28 AM

Hmmm seems to me that option is a lot easier than cutting down the crossmember to extend it. Are you going to install some gussets on the ends and in the middle for "twisting" support.

charcold-bowtie 09-02-2011 06:03 AM

I think this is 4wd tho^ What your talking about it typically for 2wd where it needs to move 6 inches or so

sureshot 09-02-2011 06:18 AM

No, I'm not going to use gussets. I actually made gussets to weld in, but decided against using them. It's 1/4" thick angle iron, it's not going to move. By measurement, the new location of the transmission mount will only be 1 1/8" onto the angle iron.

Nice job! Damn, there's alot less going on with 2WD's!

Bumpers 09-02-2011 08:22 AM

I'm gunna have to post here so I can remember this cuz I'm sure one day I will be doin it

lownslo 09-02-2011 08:26 AM

yea the 4wd has a different x member too right? It looks like your talshaft bushing is different mount too. Post up some pics when ya get it all in! Are the wires the same for you as a 2wd? ( I had to add a vss sensor and change two pins in the harness that goes into the trans.)

yea instead of having a tailshaft housing like yours the 4wd has a adapter housing that the transfercase bolts up too

Yeah, I have to add another vss as well. There a few different ways to do the wiring. I'll be swapping all of my wires at the pcm.

Looks good guys!

Mine is identicle to lownslo .

4L80e FTW

AKlowriderZ71 09-02-2011 09:40 PM

For you guys that added a mounting tab to the back of your crossmember, How much clearance to the pan do you have? Can you pull the pan without removing the crossmember? It's not much extra work to support the t-case & remove the crossmember, but I just want to know. Pics of the pan/crossmember would be cool if anyone has them.

Thanks in advance!

black04 09-02-2011 09:48 PM

I don't think i can pull my pan off without removing the crossmember.

Rick_Vor 09-03-2011 09:43 AM

Did mine with the gussets 1 1/2 years ago. It seems to be holding up just fine and IMO, much easier than the notch technique.

Good question. I'll take a look this weekend and get you an answer.

Rick

sureshot 09-03-2011 08:45 PM

Yeah, even if you have to drop the crossmember to drop the pan, no big deal like ak said.

budhayes3 09-03-2011 10:39 PM

Looks really good man, very simple solution!

R.I.P. Bud...

Heck yeah it looks good! After reading this thread this is totally what I'm going to do. I was thinking I would have to cut and extend my crossmember. Since I'm 4wd, I guess I don't have to.

Sweet!

Mine looks a lot like pats does.. Its going to be the cleanest part of my undercarriage. hahaha

Badasschevillac 05-09-2014 09:22 AM

I know this is an older thread but I have a quick question.

Will a 4l80e crossmember out of a 2500 fit a 1500 when doing the swap? And also visa-versa the 60e crossmember fit in the 2500? (Doing a drivetrain swap between a 1500 and 2500)

timmay208 05-09-2014 11:25 AM

i did mine by chopping and moving out, but then i had to notch a spot in it cause my tcase motor was hitting it

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...53185847_n.jpg

i made 2 6 3/4 plates to extend mine out

Prolly be over a month before I get everything to start building these.. I sent this one to a guy to be test fitted.. Once he puts it in and it fits I'll get the brackets laser cut. They'll prolly be $150-$160 range. And yes I'll build them for the Nnbs as well.

Will do guys

tgui 12-22-2014 12:04 PM

How far back does one need to extend the cross member for a 4WD GMT800? I'm building up my 2002 Yukon getting ready for a 4l80e swap. I thought I read 30mm, but thats only 1 inch and change and seems too short.

Thanks!

Atomic 12-22-2014 12:25 PM

2.5 inches
