4L80E Output shaft loose. Am I screwed?

I crawled under my old plow truck that has a very similar slip yoke driveshaft. I checked the yoke for play and it has zero. Rock solid. So it still doesn't seem ok to me to see that kind of play in the driveshaft's slip yoke. I guess I will try and replace the tailshaft bushing... I'll keep this updated.

my poor truck has seen 150+ a handful of times and it was still smooth... thank goodness!!
ask VinceB,, he should be able to give you some insight on the tolerances..

Scott when you have your bushing, rear seal and slip yoke on the the trans you shouldnt have slack, but if the tail housing is off and slip yoke is out and you grab the Gear your slip yoke goes onto you will have a little play back and forth

Got it. I now understand, thanks for the clarification. When I started the thread I was ready to pull the tranny, but figured I would ask here before doing anything drastic.
I just got my truck back from state inspection and alignment today. Tomorrow I'll stop at the dealer and buy a new tail housing bushing or the whole housing, however I can get it. I'll let you all know if this fixes my problem. It should.

OK... I pulled the old tailshaft housing off the trans and made some measurements on the bearing diameter... The bearing is egg shaped and it varies in diameter between 1.889"-1.912". The new bearing I just bought measures 1.887" and is round within .0005". Thats a difference of .025" between the old bearing and new.
My driveshaft slip yoke measures 1.885" That is .002" clearance between the new bearing and slip yoke vs .027" clearance with the old bearing. This should solve my vibration, I forgot to order a new seal, so I can't try it until tomorrow.
