Question 4L80E boom and lost all gears

Went to the track and made some passes and had no issues. On the last pass made it about half way and the truck made a funny noise and I lost all gears, forward/reverse/everything except park. Me and others assumed the input shaft had broken. Got the tranny out of the truck and it's not broken. I can turn the input shaft by hand and it will try to turn the output shaft and vise versa. Pulled the pan and it's clean. The tranny is an FLT and verter is a circle d 4200. I decided that the stall might have gave up so i picked up a PI 3500 and put it in(while the tranny was out i split the pump and it looked good). Made it like 30 miles and i lost all the gears again. this time i pulled the cooler line off to see if i had any pressure...none.... so its gotta be pump realated. tranny has 2500 miles and has never missed a beat. any ideas what gave up?

Do you actually have park, or is a broken output shaft just wedging its broke self against the other part of its broke self? lol

I would pull the pan to see if it is full of debris? If it is then I would say that the filter is getting plugged with junk. That might be why you have issues with it moving and then not moving. Depending on what you see it might have come out of the last converter or something is damaged in the trans. Pulling a cooler line is kind of an idiot pressure test. (Not calling you an idiot) However installing a pressure gauge in the main line pressure port is the best thing to do here. Just curious how old is the trans?

Good advice Vince, appreciate the help. Definitely a strange failure. Ever had one with a PR stuck open or something. Basically dumping off the line pressure?

I wouldn't be a builder if I hadn't! LOL Chris I've seen some stupid stuff over the years and in most cases a visual inspection of the pan is the first step I would have taken after a pressure test. From there, as you know, which direction to go! Ever seen a pinion bearing from a A4LD stick a PR valve? Just how does that make through the filter in to the PR circuit in the valve body!
