Default 4L80-E Model

By looking at the pics can any one tell me if this is the older or newer model 80-E transmissions? Thanks.

By looking at the case it's a 97^ LT1 4l80e. If you look at the tag in this picture http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e...ofIsland032.jpg it should tell you. Good luck!

This is the newer design. It is a 1997 or higher. The return oil fitting is in the rear.

Just to add to what James B. said (he's 100% correct btw) according to my GM issued 4L80E shop manual suppliment the stamped numbers on the below tag (lower middle) denote what year the trans is.

Example of a 1996 model 80e

It looks like the top bolt on the bell housing is blocked off by the webbing. If that's the case, that may be a problem.

What I said is a little misleading now that I look at it. The stamped number "96" in the lower left denotes the year not the middle number. The number 96 is in the middle of the tag so I said "lower middle" which someone may think is just the number "6" thats in the middle of the row of numbers.

Wait....thats even more confusing LOL.

How about the first two stamped numbers are the year? Does that make things clear? Yeeesh, long night at work so far .
