Default 4l65e problems

I am having some problems with the tranny in my 03 Z71.
It doesn't want to shift out of first gear, unless I ease off the throttle and basically let it shift like you would a manual when you depress the clutch.
If I am going over 30, and I try to go WOT, I hit the limiter, and don't go anywhere.

I know I need to get this rebuilt, but also need to get it beefed up for future plans. Could any transmission knowledgeable people tell me if I could replace the band and clutchpacks to solve this until I get the money for a built one? I know you can get a band and clutchpacks fairly cheap, so would it be worth the hassle?

If you can do it yourself possibly. If you have to pay someone to do it all probably wont be alot cheaper than a built one. So you would be putting good money for a short term fix.

The thing that sucks about doing it yourself is that there are a few expensive tools that you need to do it correctly. $150 seems to be a magic number for tranny tools.

Does it have any codes set? How does the fluid look? I wouldn't recommend doing tranny work if you have never done any before.

Fluid is good, was changed about 10k ago.

Ive done everything but tranny work, and am wanting to try it out, which is why I was asking.

Ive talked with several builders, and they said that Its simple if you can get a grasp of it.

Im looking at buying an Alto wide red belt, alto 9 pack 3-4 cluchpack, and then some other things.

Oregon Performance Transmission is going to cut me a deal if I order everything from them, so this is why I want to do it myself....that and the lack of funding right now.

Not a tranny builder at all, but from everything I have READ, if you install that wide band you will want to install a new drum with it. Other wise the contact surfaces of the wide band will be limited to the area of the drum untouched by the stock width band, unless by some miracle you have a perfect drum with no wear.
