Default 2006 2500HD growl, please help

Hello all. I am new to this forum, and recently purchased a 2006 2500HD with the 6.0L. I am a decent mechanic, but am new to 4wd, and could use some help.

In 2wd mode, the truck makes a growling noise. I thought it was a wheel bearing, but it only makes the noise in 2wd. It does it around 10+mph. Turning to the right makes the noise a bit louder, turning to the left makes it quieter. Also, it sounds like its coming from the front.

Any help is appreciated, thanks, Rodney.

I was thinking that also myself at first. However if it was a half-shaft, it should do it regardless of 2 or 4 wheel drive, right? This only makes the noise in 2wd. Engaging 4wd makes the noise completly dissapear.

The front prop is live at all times, putting load on it may be taking all the slack out of the joints.

Have you checked the front diff fluid condition and level??? This is often over looked in regular maintenance even if the previous owner had it regularly serviced.

I would get a stethoscope and jack the truck up and run it in 4wd. Might hear some noise. Sounds like front hub assembly to me.
