Default 1500HD VS 1500 Rear end....

Are the rear ends the same in the standard 1500 and the HD, or does the HD use a bigger unit? Thanks.

It's bigger, not sure what size. Probably the 9.5" ring gear. It's also 8 lug.

most 1500's (NBS) have the 10 bolt while the 1500HD has the 14 bolt SF (same that is in the H2). The reason I say most is that Chevy and GMC now offer the 6.0 (345hp) in the 1500 (non HD) with the 14 bolt SF. something Maxx edition.

OK thanks. The reason I am asking is I thinking of changing out to a little more heavy duty rear, with the bigger ring and pinion. My last 1/2 ton with 10 bolt gave up up the ring and pinion twice in 100K miles towing my race car and trailer. Both times the ring gear broke a tooth off. So I planned on waiting until my '05 is out of factory warranty (I am at 22K in 10 months of driving) so should be at 36K in about another 6-7 months. Thanks for the tips/info guys!

The 04 - 05 VHO and the 04 - up SS use the 14 bolt 6 lug rear end. Have not seen the Maxx yet but it should be the heavier rear end.

Cool. I currently have the 3.23 gear set as well, and I made a haul with my car and trailer to Michigan and back from Houston, and it KILLED my truck....in and out of overdrive constantly, to where I finally took it out of overdrive. So I plan on making a gear swap to some 4.10's, but did not want to put any money into this rear end unless I had to. Thanks again for the info.

Yeah, I did the math, and seems like the 4.10's are the way to go. I looked heavily at the 3.73's, and did the math, and just seemed the 4.10's were still the way to go.

Why not go with 3.90's then?
