Default 02 Envoy needs some rear end love

Not that kind.

Had some chatter and shaking upon takeoff on a turn. Went to drain the fliud and I had 3 large pieces of metal on the plug magnet. Come to find out the spider teeth have been chewed off at the tips but the side gears are fine.

The diff is a 4:10 G80 8.0 and I'm looking at swapping for an SS rear form an 07 model, low mileage. Just under 40K.

Apparently they are plug-n-play for the most part, just contemplating if it's possible just to change the spiders on the stocker or is it just time to get a beefier unit in there.....axle has 173K on it.

I do want to put some power to it later on so the SS rear is the wiser choice. Being a larger housing I have come to realize my driveshaft will need to be shortened or is there a donor vehicle that would have a driveshaft equivalent to the length I would need? Looks like about 1.5" shorter than stock, I also have the SWB model with an I6 and 4WD.

Would the SS axle have any clearance issues mainly above it in the Envoy?

Thanks for any help on this.

Well, here's the update....I did get the SS rear and I'm pondering swapping the G86 for the Eaton Truetrac.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade or if I'm not putting big power to it yet should I just keep the G86?

I'm not sure how strong those stock lockers actually are, safest route would be to go to an aftermarket proven unit of some sort.

The G86 Is a Limited Slip Posi from Eaton. It's a good unit. Remember the 9.5's are much more durable then the 8.625. The difference should only be 5/8 of an inch not 1.5 inches.

Keep us posted.

The rear in mine is actually the 8.0"

I will pick it up in the next week or so and I will update as I progress.
