Default Walbro 450 In 99-03 Bucket

Getting ready to install the Walbro 450 today, and had a few questions.

It seems that people install the pump inside the bucket and have it draw fuel from there and others flatten the bottom of the bucket and have the sock suck from the bottom of the tank. I have mine pulling fuel from the bucket. Will the 450 suck the bucket dry?

The other question was, is it normal for the bucket to leak fuel? I filled it with water and notices it leaks/seeps from the factory strainer. Is that normal? Here is a short video of what I am talking about.

Why would you want fuel pulling from that tiny little bucket?

With 2 of those pumps in my 2000 bucket...there is no functional bucket left. And I run at the track with 3/4 to full tank.

To keep the pump cool and prevent the pump starving for fuel on take off or on hills.

Do you think the 450 will drain the bucket with the return filling it? Some say yes, others say no. Man I don't know. lol

The stock tank is not a performance tank.

If you want to cover all your bases run a fuel cell either baffled or sumped.

I haven't had a problem with no bucket however.

Without an adequate venturi, I would not pickup from inside an intact bucket. Since you are running a single 450, you may be able to stick the pickup thru the bottom of the bucket without hacking it up. This would keep the bucket full with return fuel for the pump cooling you are after and have plenty volume for intake outside the bucket.

Yes, I know. maybe even a surge tank.

Thanks for the feedback! The external strainer/filter hole is bigger than the pump inlet, so I don't think I would be able to seal it off.

I ran the numbers, and I think I will only be able to go WOT for 7 seconds with a full bucket (16 ounces) assuming no fill from the return or bucket flapper valves. That does not seem ideal.

If I end up cutting the bucket, I think it is not worth doing just one pump, might as well do two.

The stock fuel pump has the filter OUTSIDE the bucket. Think about that for a sec.

I was just wanting to see if he ended up running the sock outside or inside the bucket. I'm going to be doing this pump very soon. I'm gathering as much information as I can now so nobody blows me up with the typical "use the search function" reply when I start a new thread looking for recommendations or advice. I figured this pump could support my 600 rwhp goal.

I pulled the two little fittings out of the bottom of the bucket. That should help things a little I hope.
