i think the 4.9 is a straight 6 that has 300ci. my friend had one with a five speed. i don't know about getting any performance out of them but they're a decent work truck that makes torque.

I think this engine made 150hp not sure. Pretty reliable engines that were taken good care of would run 300k between rebuilds

4.9 is an I-6. Not a whole lot of aftermarket out there for those but anything is possible. The 300 was a GREAT motor. Damn near indestructible and perfect for haulin crap. they were made to be a workhorse and that's exactly what the are. They made low horsepower but a TON of torque. More torque than the 302 in the trucks of that timeframe.

Bottom line, great truck and great motor but, not for speed. You want something cheaper and quick, go with a 1st gen Lightning. You can find those for 3-5 k if you look hard enough.

I had one when I was a kid... well a younger kid, any way, I drove it like a bat outta hell and never hurt it, didnt burn oil or nothing, the transmission behind it was **** though. After I got my first chevy right before it was going to the junk yard because fixing the tranny again was more expensive than the truck was worth, we put it in neutral and put a brick on the accelerator and let it run tell it blew up. Didnt blow up, just ran out of gas. Never did destroy it.

As far as mods go, I put a 4bbl carb on it, and a split manifold (for true duals but it sounded like ***) gutted the cats and put on glass packs. Never was fast but it was a lot of fun.
